What is Aadhaar Virtual ID?
Aadhaar Virtual ID is a 16-digit temporary code that needs to be deciphered for Aadhaar related authentications.
Virtual IDs can be used in place of the designated Aadhaar number. The same virtual ID can be provided to the agencies to protect your unique Aadhaar details by someone untrustworthy. The same virtual id can be used as an eKYC tool at private and government institutions.
This facility was started and implemented on 1st June 2018. The sole purpose of launching this new workability has been the need to eliminate Aadhaar breach issue. Primarily because it’s difficult to trace the Aadhaar number from the virtual ID and hence no theft and malpractices can be made possible.
The Need for Aadhaar Virtual IDs: An Overview
There have been numerous unfortunate incidents where Aadhaar details have been misused and people have been badly cheated. People have been concerned about the safety of their Aadhaar number and its details. UIDAI has settled claims of individuals by introducing the concept of virtual ID. When users submit their virtual IDs instead of Aadhaar, companies/corporates cannot access Aadhaar and its details but authentication is still carried out. Hence, confidential details of the individuals and numbers stay secure and in a vault.
Aadhaar users can simply generate the virtual ID for themselves and validate their identity. Once the authentication is done, another virtual ID can be generated so that the earlier ID cannot be misused or leaked in anyway.

Process to Generate a Virtual ID
It’s really important to know the process to generate a virtual ID. Let’s have a quick look at the steps to generate Aadhaar Virtual ID online:
- Visit UIDAI website at uidai.gov.in
- Click on the tab “Virtual ID (VID) Generator” from Aadhaar Services section
- You will be taken to a fresh VID Generation page
- Enter your 12 digit Aadhaar Numberand the security number
- Now click on “Send OTP”
- An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number with UIDAI
- Type the OTP and select the option to either “Generate VID” or “Retrieve VID”
- Now click on Submit
- You will get a message which reads “Congratulations! Your VID Number Successfully generated and sent to the Number Registered.”
Soon, all the service providers and top notch companies will start accepting virtual IDs replacing the Aadhaar number.
